About

My name is Rosivaldo Novaes and I am a Brazilian-born artist and graphic designer currently living in Los Angeles. Growing up in Brazil, art classes were among my favorite parts of school. After graduating from high school, I spent time in London exploring the European art scene. As my interest in the visual arts expanded, I began my training as a graphic artist.

My work as a painter came about as a natural extension of my work as a graphic artist, where the digital domain somehow left me feeling as though the materials were always being kept at arm’s length. Painting allows me the freedom to directly interact with the canvas and I’m always fascinated by the improvisation that is possible when nothing stands between the artist and medium. Often, my paintings incorporate the contemporary aesthetics of graphic design.

I like to make statements with my paintings and I rely on the fact that – no matter what the subject is, the viewpoint of the artist always comes into play. In a sense, painting allows me to step between the subject and the viewer, acting like a guide that can bring the two closer together.
